Precision Air Crash Survivors Seek Compensation

In the aftermath of the tragic crash of Precision Air Flight 494 on November 6, 2022, survivors and the families of the 19 victims have initiated legal proceedings seeking compensation for the losses and injuries sustained.

The Crash

The ATR 42-500 aircraft, operating as Precision Air Flight 494, was en route from Dar es Salaam to Bukoba, with a stopover in Mwanza. The flight encountered severe weather conditions, including heavy rain and low visibility, as it approached Bukoba Airport. The aircraft crashed into Lake Victoria approximately 500 meters short of the runway, resulting in the deaths of 19 individuals and injuries to 24 others.

Survivors’ Legal Actions

Two survivors of the crash have filed lawsuits seeking a total of Tanzanian Shillings 7.2 billion (approximately $3 million USD) in compensation. The plaintiffs allege that the airline’s negligence, including failure to adequately prepare for adverse weather conditions and lack of proper communication, contributed to the crash. They are seeking damages for physical injuries, psychological trauma, and loss of income due to the incident.

Insurance Coverage

Precision Air has confirmed that it holds valid insurance coverage for such incidents. The Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority (TIRA) has indicated that the airline’s insurance policy is sufficient to cover the compensation claims. However, the exact amount available for compensation has not been publicly disclosed.

The Tanzanian government has expressed its commitment to ensuring that the victims and survivors receive appropriate compensation. Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has stated that the government will facilitate the compensation process and support the legal proceedings.

As the legal proceedings continue, the survivors and the families of the victims remain hopeful that justice will be served and that appropriate compensation will be provided for the losses and suffering endured. The case highlights the importance of airline accountability and the need for stringent safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
