South African Airways Eyes new routes

South African Airways (SAA) is set to expand its domestic and regional network with several new and revived routes, marking a significant step in its post-restructuring growth strategy.

New and Revived Routes

Domestic Routes:

  • Johannesburg to George: Scheduled to commence in April 2026, this route will connect Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport with George in the Western Cape, enhancing access to the Garden Route.
  • Johannesburg to East London: Plans are underway to introduce this service, with the launch date to be announced. This route aims to bolster connectivity to the Eastern Cape.
  • Cape Town to Durban: SAA intends to relaunch this intercity service, with the start date to be confirmed. The route will facilitate travel between two major South African cities and complete South Africas ‘golden triangle.’

Regional Routes:

  • Johannesburg to Gaborone (Botswana): Set to launch in October 2025, this route will enhance regional connectivity between South Africa and Botswana.
  • Cape Town to Mauritius: A seasonal service is planned to commence in November 2025, catering to leisure travelers seeking tropical destinations.

These expansions are part of SAA’s broader strategy to reestablish its presence in key markets and support economic and tourism growth within the region.
