In early February 2025, LAM Mozambique Airlines (LAM) issued a tender seeking expressions of interest for the supply of Embraer E190 and Boeing 737-700 aircraft. The airline did not specify the number of aircraft required, indicating that the decision would depend on the proposals received.
Current Fleet and Operational Challenges
As of February 2025, LAM’s in-house fleet includes one active DHC-8-Q400 aircraft, with additional aircraft such as a Boeing 737-700 and two more Q400s currently inactive. The airline has been utilizing wet-leased aircraft to maintain operations, including two CRJ900s from South Africa’s CemAir and a Boeing 767-300ER from Portugal’s Euro Atlantic Airways for its Lisbon route.
In January 2025, LAM returned a Boeing 737-300 freighter to its lessor after failing to obtain the necessary operational certifications in Mozambique for over a year. This incident highlights the regulatory challenges the airline faces in expanding its fleet. LAM has also taken the decision to suspend flights to 3 destination in an attempt to end loss-making routes.
Strategic Plans and Future Outlook
Despite these challenges, LAM remains committed to modernizing its fleet and expanding its route network. The recent tender for Embraer E190 and Boeing 737-700 aircraft is part of the airline’s strategy to enhance its operational capacity and service offerings. The decision to issue the tender without specifying the number of aircraft indicates a flexible approach, allowing the airline to assess the market and determine the optimal fleet size based on the proposals received.
The outcome of this tender will be crucial for LAM’s future operations, as acquiring suitable aircraft is essential for meeting growing travel demand and improving connectivity within Mozambique and across the region. The airline’s ability to navigate regulatory hurdles and secure the necessary certifications will also play a significant role in the success of its fleet expansion plans.
