In a strategic move to address financial challenges, LAM Mozambique Airlines (LAM) has announced the suspension of its intercontinental route to Lisbon and regional routes to Harare and Lusaka. This decision follows significant accumulated losses on these routes, prompting the airline to reevaluate its operations.
Financial Challenges and Route Suspensions
LAM’s Maputo-Lisbon route, reintroduced in December 2023 after a 13-year hiatus, has incurred over $21 million in losses. The service, operated with wet-leased Boeing 767-300ER and Boeing 777-200ER aircraft from euroAtlantic Airways, faced operational difficulties, including delays and cancellations, reportedly due to overdue lease payments. Similarly, the regional routes to Harare and Lusaka have been suspended due to financial losses totaling $307,000. These flights were operated by LAM’s subsidiary, Mocambique Expresso, using an Embraer E145 aircraft.

Looking ahead, LAM plans to focus on consolidating its domestic services, aiming to strengthen its financial position and improve service quality. The airline has also issued a tender for the acquisition of Embraer ERJ190 and Boeing 737-700 aircraft, signaling intentions to modernize its fleet and expand operations in the future.
