Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority sanctions 5 airlines

In a bold move to uphold consumer rights and ensure compliance with aviation regulations, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has officially sanctioned five major airlines for various infractions. The affected carriers—Royal Air Maroc, Arik Air, Ethiopian Airlines, Aero Contractors, and Air Peace—have all received their sanction letters, with the possibility of even steeper penalties on the horizon.

Michael Achimugu, the Director for Consumer Protection and Public Affairs at the NCAA, confirmed the development, stating, “Yesterday, the five airlines received their letters of sanctions officially” But this is just the beginning. Achimugu revealed that the NCAA is still investigating the airlines’ operations and could impose additional fines, potentially reaching a record-breaking N200 million for chronic violations.

What Led to the Sanctions?

The crackdown comes after a surge in passenger complaints, particularly regarding delayed refunds and unprofessional conduct. Weeks ago, the NCAA had issued a stern warning to airlines, reminding them of their obligation to process refunds within the timeframe specified in Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023. Failure to comply, the authority warned, would result in sanctions.

True to their word, the NCAA took decisive action. Among the airlines, Royal Air Maroc faces the heaviest fine—up to N300 million—for alleged unprofessional conduct and failure to meet regulatory standards. The other airlines are also under scrutiny as the NCAA continues to gather evidence and monitor their operations.

For passengers, this crackdown is a win. It highlights the NCAA’s dedication to holding airlines accountable and ensuring that travellers are treated fairly. If you’ve ever been frustrated by delayed refunds or poor service, this action is a step in the right direction. It also serves as a reminder to always report any issues to the relevant authorities—your complaints can lead to real change.
