Air Tanzania has become the first airline in Africa to take delivery of the Boeing 737-9 Max variant. The airline placed an order for two of the -9 variants direct from Boeing. On its 17,878km long delivery flight, the aircraft flew from Seattle to San Juan, then onwards to Dakar and finally its last leg to Dar Es Salaam, where it was received with a traditional water cannon salute.

Although they are the first to take delivery of the -9 variant in Africa, they join a long list of other airlines who operate the Max version. The other airlines operating the Max version in Africa are Ethiopian Airlines, Asky Airlines, Cabo Verde, Royal Air Marroc, Mauritania Airlines, and Comair: British Airways (now defunct). All mentioned airlines operate the B737-8 Max variant.
