Fly Dubai has been granted permission to operate on the Dubai – Mombasa route by the Kenyan Government. Fly Dubai is yet to confirm when they will begin flights. Currently, only Kenya Airways operates on the route flying three times weekly using a boing 737 aircraft. “We have a balance between protecting our local airlines and inviting business and tourists into the country. But even in that situation, we have approved Fly Dubai which will begin flying directly from Dubai to Mombasa in two months,” said Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.
Ethiopian airlines was also granted permission to increase flights on the Addis Ababa – Mombasa route from one weekly flight to two weekly flights. Other airlines such as KLM, Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines have all expressed interest in operating to Mombasa and negotiations are ongoing. Kipchumba Murkomen said, “We have also approved Ethiopian Airlines to fly twice directly to Mombasa. We are analysing the Turkish Airlines and many others.”
